However, because they only staff less than bare minimum, 90% of the time I was on the register, on the floor helping customers, or picking up hazardous piles of product left by overnight shift. Not only was my job to make sales from walkup customers, but also accurately assemble the frames using the proper technique and materials (handling the often expensive artwork of the customer). I was a custom framer and therefore given very stringent sales goals to hit in my department, but still paid only slightly above minimum wage. The entire thing needs a top to bottom overhaul. Working here would have been amazing and fun if the company realized they need to have more than two employees running the whole store. I love what I do, I just don't love who I do it for anymore. Tuition and crisis assistance are available. You can also get employee pricing from other companies for goods and services, however I believe that you have to go through the company marketplace. If you are full time (not many positions are, outside of management) you can get insurance and retirement benefits. If you are part time, hours can be super flexible which is good for students. It is also glaringly obvious that you are highly expendible to upper management. The store level environment can be great, fun, and supportive. Cashiers are currently started at $8-$8.50 an hour. Below store manager level, managers are paid way less than average. Just be aware that you should LOVE working retail before you plan on staying long. I've been rambling on for too long now, but the fact of the matter is that michaels at its core is a decent company, - more. there have been countless occasions where there is not a single employee on the sales floor and the only visible worker in the entire store is the cashier. this paired with the fact that we're already working with a skeleton crew means that we're often horribly understaffed on our busiest days. my hours are terrible and keep fluctuating corporate will only designate so many hours to each store given their sales quotas, and if those quotas aren't met, then they'll cut TENS of hours from the store budget. ![]() i started my job at above minimum wage, was promised a raise, was lied to about getting said raise to keep me working there, and now i am AT minimum wage due to it being raised at the beginning of 2023. i am a professional getting paid the federally required minimum wage. daily i am very knowledgeable about what i do, and a lot of the time, it is genuinely hard work. i handle artwork, build frames, cut glass, etc. The pay is abysmal and the management is lackluster. i have a good relationship with all of my colleagues and i like what michaels represents as a company. i help cashier and whatnot sometimes and that's really not too bad either, especially since the store is rarely super busy. i get to work with my hands and be creative while doing so. being an artsy person working in an arts store and being able to create custom designs is wonderful. I've been a custom framer at michaels for well over a year now and i really like it.
